This week begins an ad campaign for nominations for the Great Journalist Award, Sweden's answer to the Pulitzer Prize. The nomination period closes on Sept. 30 and the actual awards will be announced on Nov. 25 at the Rotunda of the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. The prize, which is sponsored by Bonnier, is awarded in three categories - investigative reporting, storytelling, innovation - as well as Lukas Bonniers Stora Journalistpris, awarded for lifetime achievement in journalism.
While anyone can make a nomination, a jury of eminent journalists from around Sweden decide on nine finalists for the three categories, which will be announced on Nov. 2. This year, Bonnier AB CEO Jonas Bonnier replaces Carl-Johan Bonnier as head of the jury.
Stefan Mehr, who has been the program leader and responsible for the award ceremony, goes in as well as a jury member. "There will be some changes to the event this year," he says. "But the base for the prize remains the same," he says. "The prize is extraordinarily prestigious and without a doubt, Sweden's highest journalistic distinction."
