In 2010, Bonnier Utbildning sponsored the Poesi Direkt poetry contest. Over 2,500 entries came from teens all over Sweden. This year Sweden's junior high students will compete with short stories. Author and popular actor Jonas Karlsson has written the start of two short stories for the contest, and students will compete by finishing one of the stories.

"The goal of the contest is to stimulate junior high schoolers' reading and writing skills," says Lena Rydorff, who works with marketing at educational materials publisher Bonnier Utbildning. "We want to show teachers how they can work in a simple way with writing short stories by using Svenska Direkt teaching materials."

Swedish stage and screen actor Jonas Karlsson has had two short story collections published by Wahlström & Widstrand and will have a book out in fall 2011. He jumped at the idea when approached by Bonnier Utbildning.

"It will be fun to inspire kids to start writing their own tales, get them hooked on the short story habit," says Karlsson.

The contest has been marketed with a materials sent out to all of Sweden's junior high schools in the mail, as well as with ads. Bonnier Utbildning is also using Facebook and Twitter to spread the news about the contest and also Svenska Direkt.

"Facebook gives us the chance to have more interaction with teachers, they can make comments and give other feedback about Svenska Direkt," says Rydorff.

The short story contest deadline is April 15. A selection of the texts will be published at Svenska Direkt's website.
