Nia Williams: Frankfurt Prep

GROW's Nia puts in a request for a new mock-up table and recommends Five Mile's advance copy incentive.

Well, we are still very busy at Five Mile. We are currently working on titles for the Frankfurt Book Fair for the end of September this year. I bet you're really envious, aren't you Autumn, as we do ours two weeks before the book fairs. I suppose the joke is on me really, because I'm doing Frankfurt stuff now in Australia, and when I get back to the UK, I'll be starting again! The reason Five Mile has started early is because a lot of the mockups get done at the printers, rather than in-house. I second that idea, less back-breaking dummy-making and late nights!!

Five Mile does have a great mock-up table though; in fact, they have two. They are high enough so that you don't bend over hurting your back, or turn your desk into a tip. The mock up table has shelves around its side, for all papers, glue, tape, laminate, inks, tones, everything you need in its place, so less mess in the office. Michael, can we pleeeeeeeeeeeease get one of these, and get rid of those ten tables that are collecting dust downstairs, looking like a graveyard for abandoned tables!!!??????? Perhaps swap them all on EBay for one decent table?

Even though everyone has a different role and position at Five Mile, there is a little incentive foreach and every member of staff, and that's advance copies of every title that gets printed. Genius, if all office copies disappear, then some member of staff will have a copy! This happens about five times a year, and it's normally two very big boxes. I have been with Autumn for over 8 years, I have no idea where I'd keep all my copies. But you can do whatever you like with them.  Even if you haven't worked on a title, you are still entitled to get a copy, although you don't have to take one, of course.

So I think this should be tip number four. Each member of Autumn gets copies of printed books, if they wish. I'm not sure if the boys down in the warehouse would like to pack each and every box, but still, great gesture. Perhaps I should put a request in for tip number five, a proper mock up table, since we do our dummies in house!

Here are some pictures of the Great Ocean Road that I did the on the weekend. It was the sunniest of days since I've been here, a really great day out, with some amazing scenery.
