New Group Shopping Site Dealie from Sydsvenskan and Göteborgs-Posten

Taking advantage of the trend for deals for site members, the Dealie website will launch tomorrow.

Tomorrow, Swedish regional dailies Sydsvenskan and Göteborgs-Posten will launch the group shopping deal site together. Members of the site will receive 50-90 percent rebates for a specific product or service, with each deal lasting between 24 and 48 hours. The seller or store providing the offer pays for the customers while the marketing is provided free. Dealie will get roughly 40 percent of the net value of the deal.

"This will allow us to offer a new channel for our customers," says Peter Mayerhofer, Sydsvenskan's brand manager and project manager for Dealie. "For us at Sydsvenskan, it's natural to want to help our readers reach the local ad market."

Similar sites, such as Groupon, have been around for 10 years, but only recently have they become a hit, in great part thanks to social media.

Mayerhofer says that established morning papers have a strong chance of challenging the big group shopping deal sites. "Advertisers offerings get exposure in our own channels, and no other channels in our region reach so many people on the same day," he says.

Göteborgs-Posten and Sydsvenskan have equal 50-50 shares in Dealie, the brand and the domain name. An external supplier will provide the technology, customer service and administration of the site.

"We decided together with GP that we wanted to have our own brand that we could actively work with," says Mayerhofer. "I hope that more newspapers join in."
