Start spreading the news,
I'm leaving today.
I want to be a part of it, New York, New York.
...
Oh, boy, what should I write for my first post? Only a bit more than a week has passed of my stay here in New York City, working as a research analyst in the corporate research department of Bonnier Corporation, and so many things have already happened and I have gathered many experiences.
What I am sure of after a week, is that these three months of being away from home — that is Slovenia and my home company Casnik Finance, which publishes the number one business daily in Slovenia and services, with its activities that many other business professionals' need and are interested in — will feel like more than "regular" 3 months.
I've been at Casnik Finance for almost five years. Over the years, I've been working in different areas in the company, but currently I work as a managing director adviser for development, which is in brief working as a key project lead of new projects/business areas of the company. My first launched project, and hopefully not the last one, is a bi-monthly newspaper for doctors, dentists and pharmacists, titled Medicina danes (Medicine today), which we started publishing in the beginning of this year (sorry, I know you would rather be reading how it is here in New York, but you know how mothers are proud of their babies :-).
Here at Bonnier Corporation, which is one of the largest consumer-publishing groups in America, and with nearly 50 special-interest magazines and related multimedia projects and events, I am learning a lot. In Slovenia, we only have one syndicated research for print and one for internet pages, while here they/we use a number of syndicated research and do a number of our own researches. The main purpose of the market research department is to provide sales and editorial part of magazines with relevant, useful data to support their efforts in making ad sales and editorial decisions. For example, from January to the end of July 09, the department ran more than 1,800 market research requests for different magazines.
So, as I said before, I am learning a lot, and hopefully my new colleagues, who are really nice and friendly, will be able to learn something from me. Well at least now they know a person from Slovenia (which is a bit rare, as we are only 2 million).
I think this was enough to start with. I promise the next post will be more interesting to read, as the getting to know each other part is behind us (it's like a must thing you have to go over on the first date, but when that is over, the fun can start).
Photos can tell more than a million words, here are some from my first week in NYC. Enjoy and please do comment, as I need topics to discuss on our second date.
