Born and raised in Orlando, Florida, the Sunshine State, Rebecca Kinnear has spent her fall in Finland. "I'd heard how cold and dark it can be, but there have been plenty of beautiful days when the sun is shining and the weather is lovely," she says.
Kinnear, 31, is in Finland at MTV3 for three months as part of the GROW program, working as a web editor for Helmi, a popular women's website in Finland. This complements her job at Bonnier Corporation in the U.S., where she works as web editor for Destination Weddings and Honeymoons. "I have been using my experience to brainstorm story ideas to help increase traffic to the site," she says. "I've been creating evergreen content about wedding planning, and building photo galleries that will serve as visual inspiration to future brides -- things like wedding cakes, gowns, flowers, hairstyles, etc."
Kinnear originally applied to MTV3 as a web designer but she ended up being accepted into the online content department instead, which turned out to be a better fit. "Being on the constant lookout for articles to post online will really help me seek out new content for DWH's website when I return home," she says. "I've been exposed to so many other websites in the process, some from other magazines as well. I've been able to get new ideas for our homepage and blog, plus fresh ways to present content and maximize pageviews. Also, MTV3's processes have helped me realize new ways to create unique web content quickly and frequently in a way that will relate to our brand."
While Kinnear has gotten plenty of ideas from her work at MTV3, she found another source of inspiration worth copying. "I want to take back our department's weekly tradition called 'perjantaipullo' or Friday bottle. Everyone who wants to play puts one euro and their name in a jar; the money is used to purchase a bottle of wine or alcohol. On Fridays at lunch, a drawing is held and someone wins the bottle for the weekend. Very good for office morale!"
Kinnear will also be bringing back with her a host of memories, among which the best is her co-workers. "The people have been the best part about my job here," she says. "You never know what to expect when starting a new job, and everyone has been really nice and made me feel really welcome."
And outside the job, she has plenty of memories as well. "Helsinki's music scene is amazing," Kinnear says. "I'm a DJ back in The States, and I have fallen in love with the nightlife here. I love funk music and I literally hear it everywhere - bars, clubs, restaurants, cafes. There are eight record stores within a block of my apartment, which is like a dream come true for me! I feel so lucky to be living in such a cultural and artistic city for three months. I wish it was longer!"
