Meet Katie Maggio

For GROW participant Katie Maggio, coffee breaks are more than just coffee and a cinnamon bun, they're about team building.

Katie Maggio arrived in Stockholm just in time for her 24th birthday. The North Carolina native has been working within the corporate research department at Bonnier Corporation in New York for the past two and a half years, where she is currently a digital research analyst. That is until she moved to Stockholm as part of the GROW program to work at Bonnier Tidskrifter as a research analyst.

"Back in New York, I am a member of a 13-member research team," Maggio says in comparing the two companies. "But here in Stockholm the research team is a bit more intimate, with a small but mighty three members."

So far, Maggio has been impressed not just with how well everyone speaks English. "Whenever I am confused or lost, I can always find someone who is happy to help me! My co-workers have been especially helpful, I feel right at home with them," she says. She also says that Sweden is ahead of the U.S. in terms of recycling.

One of Maggio's favorite parts of her workday is the traditional Swedish coffee break, called a "fika." And not just because of the cinnamon buns that sometimes come with the coffee. "Fikas provide a nice time for colleagues to bond as a team."

She says that what she'll be bringing back with her are memories of a beautiful city. "Stockholm is so beautiful with all its bridges and waterways," she says. "I love strolling around aimlessly after work. I will only be in Stockholm for three short months, but these memories will be with me for the rest of my life."
