Andreas Sandin loves his job. "I'm incredibly competitive so working with sales gives me the chance to beat clear goals and the competition. It doesn't get any better," says Sandin, who is the business unit manager for department sales at Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter. He is definitely good at what he does as well - he was just named a finalist in the Bonnier Sales Awards as Sales Manager of the Year.
Sandin also likes working in the newspaper business. "Looking at the past 15-20 years, newspapers have been on the cutting edge of media development," he says. "We were first with the Internet, cell phones and now tablets. At Dagens Nyheter, our products and customer offering is under constant development. And that's perfect for me!"
Getting customers to see the power of morning papers isn't always easy, Sandin says. "As the media market gets more fragmented, the stronger morning newspapers are," he says. "The more sources there are, the greater the need for credibility, inspiration and choice. Which is what morning papers offer."
While Sandin is proud to offer his customers access to 850,000 readers, he says there is room for improvement still, as well as development opportunities, such as with DN+, Dagens Nyheter's app for tablets, which the paper has worked hard on and has the possibility of providing advertisers with new advantages.
It's clear that Sandin is passionate about his job, something he says is key to success: "Never be satisfied, but still look for challenges that you're passionate about and pass on your passion to your sales team."
As for being a finalist in the Bonnier Sales Awards, Sandin says it feels fantastic. "Above all, I know just how careful the jury weighs everything," he says. "It's hard to imagine better confirmation that you're doing a good job."
