Popular Science Adds Value with its Emerging Media Lab

A tailored show with gadgets and information gives Popular Science’s advertisers and media partners a taste of the latest technology

It all started with gadgets. The offices of Popular Science are filled with gadgets and new technology – everything from cell phones to tablet computers to media players – that the magazine covers for its readers. So when sales reps kept hearing from the magazine's advertisers and media partners that they wanted to know more about the latest in technology from the magazine, the staff decided it was a smart idea to connect the advertisers to the gadgets.

Reklamcupen: In the Name of Creativity

Summer blahs? Not for creative people. Reklamcupen - the Advertising Cup - is underway, a competition sponsored by Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter.

Since 2004, Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter has given an award for the most creative advertisement for a particular brand with a special kind of competition. The contest, called Reklamcupen, is designed like an athletic tournament, with the first round finishing today, July 21. Two ads compete against each other in a total of 10 matches, then it's time for the next round, then the quarter finals, the semifinals and the final.

Dagens Medicin Changes with the Times

Dagens Medicin recently moved offices to be close to sister publication Dagens Industri. For CEO Anders Eriksson, the move provides synergies and ideas for a brand that is building on its strengths and going in new directions.

When Anders Eriksson, CEO for Bonnier Business Press International, had the opportunity to move all the Swedish publications of the company into one place, he jumped at the chance. "Most of our businesses are so spread out geographically around Europe, it's great when we get such an opportunity to take advantage of it," he says.

Russia's first glossy culinary magazine, Gastronom, which was launched in 2001, also happens to be the most treasured by Russians. According to a TNS Gallup Poll, it is No. 1 in its class in terms of readership in the Russian market.

"Gastronom has had a strong readership from the beginning in 2001," says Andrey Zakharin, editor-in-chief.

Meet Ellen Adolfsson

GROW participant Ellen Adolfsson takes on the challenge of unusual and complex book design at Templar in the U.K.

The most exciting thing about Ellen Adolfsson's new position is learning about the abstract art of paper engineering.  "I didn't even know there was such a thing," says GROW participant Adolfsson, 45, who made a switch from being a graphic designer at Bonnier Carlsen in Stockholm to being a designer at Templar in Surrey, England. "This is a new way of thinking to me - books that fold out, things that pop-up off the pages and move.

  • Leveraging virtual private network (VPN) technologies, more people are able to get work accomplished remotely. This reduces travel, putting less carbon in the air and reduces physical business support costs.
  • Refreshing and replacing all older computers and monitors saves energy. All old CRT monitors are gone and have been recycled.
  • Adopting WMWare ESX Virtual Computing means reducing servers from many to very few machines.

Vi i Villa Shows the Way for Homeowners

2.3 million readers, Vi i Villa is Sweden's biggest circulation magazine. It reaches all homeowners in Sweden and is financed completely by advertising.

Vi i Villa has been published since 1956, but has been owned by Bonnier only since 1998. Since the acquisition, sales have gone up from SEK 50 million in Sweden to SEK 300 million in the whole Nordic region. The magazine doesn't have subscribers in the usual sense of the word - Sweden's over 2 million homeowners get the magazine free at home in the mail ten times per year.

"One of the keys to our success is the possibility to advertise locally," says Christian Rudén, CEO.

Meet Stephanie Tang

Experiencing a new culture was key for GROW participant Stephanie Tang.

What surprises Stephanie Tang most about the Sydney office of Weldon Owen is how diverse the culture is. "One of my co-workers says we're like the UN," says Tang. She is participating in the GROW program, working for three months as a designer for Weldon Owen's Discovery Education books. Tang's regular job is at Weldon Owen Inc. in San Francisco, where she has worked for the past three and a half years as a senior designer.

The first installment of workshops began in February, and publishers have been quick to see the results.
