Bonnier Corporation's IT department has been working the past two years behind the scenes to make the company more eco-friendly. Wayne Ackley, senior manager for corporate IT support at Bonnier Corporation lists the five top ways IT is working to improve the environment - and save money at the same time.

- Leveraging virtual private network (VPN) technologies, more people are able to get work accomplished remotely. This reduces travel, putting less carbon in the air and reduces physical business support costs.
- Refreshing and replacing all older computers and monitors saves energy. All old CRT monitors are gone and have been recycled.
- Adopting WMWare ESX Virtual Computing means reducing servers from many to very few machines. This has allowed virtualizing 70 servers onto seven physical servers over the past two years, saving the company an estimated USD 1 million over five years. Annual carbon emissions related to power and cooling have been reduced by an estimated 262 tons per year (Estimates based on TCO/ROI calculator using industry standards and averages.)
- Reducing travel by using video conferencing and teleconferencing.
- Older switches have been replaced with new switches for much lower support and expense costs and lower power consumption.
