First Week with New Dagens Nyheter

Ten days of the newly updated Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter have been published. We talked with managing editor Åsa Tillberg about the first week and what's in store in the future.

How have things gone since the Sept. 19 launch? Are you feeling sure on your feet yet?

It's gone extremely well, both in terms of our readers and for us at Dagens Nyheter. It's a big change in direction for the news staff since with the remake we also changed to a new system called Newspilot.

DN Eats Breakfast with Advertisers

On Monday, Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter invited a number of its advertsiers to a breakfast meeting at Escalier in Central Stockholm. The meetings were to talk about the newspaper's new weekend edition.

What is the biggest challenge in ad sales, for Dagens Nyheter as well as the general market?

For Dagens Nyheter, we're facing a total remake of the newspaper which is a challenge both editorially and in terms of business. In the long run, the challenge is to reach strong profitability for DN as a whole. More generally, it means finding the right business model for every channel - print, web, mobile, tablets etc.

The winners have been announced for DN Reklamcupen Jr, a contest for students studying advertising that mirrors Dagens Nyheter's Reklamcupen contest for ad agencies. The winners were Adam Gäfvert and Per Sturesson from Beckmans College of Design.

Better Business with the DN Card

Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter's customer club card, DN-kortet, started as a way of rewarding subscribers, but it has become much more than that. Some 230,000 DN-card holders can now choose to take advantage - or not - of a range of travel, entertainment and products especially chosen for them.

On April 15 he turns 80: Bonnierförlagen celebrates poet Tomas Tranströmer with a special edition – and he receives a government honor as well.

Tomas Tranströmer debuted in 1954 with a poetry collection 17 dikter (17 poems). More than 50 years later he still makes the news and is one of Sweden's most well-known poets.

Meet Andreas Sandin

Bonnier Sales Manager of the Year nominee Andreas Sandin from Dagens Nyheter says passion is key to success.

Andreas Sandin loves his job. "I'm incredibly competitive so working with sales gives me the chance to beat clear goals and the competition. It doesn't get any better," says Sandin, who is the business unit manager for department sales at Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter. He is definitely good at what he does as well - he was just named a finalist in the Bonnier Sales Awards as Sales Manager of the Year.

Sydsvenskan and DN Win Awards from Society for News Design

The annual Scandinavian Society for News Design meeting also gave nods to Dagens Industri and Trelleborgs Allehanda.

At the end of September, the SNDS (Society for News Design Scandinavia) held its yearly seminar at the new Oslo Opera house. In connection with the meeting, the society awarded the Best of Scandinavian News Design 2010 prizes. Sydsvenskan took home no less than nine awards. And DN.se took home a number of top awards was well - including two second-place prizes, one for most attractive site and one for its homepage.

Swedish Daily Dagens Nyheter Starts Online Reading Group

During the recent Gothenburg Book Fair, Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter launched its Book Circle, a new initiative for both the online and the print newspaper. The site will be up in several weeks.

Dagens Nyheter's review editor Åsa Beckman explains that the newspaper's Saturday book section was the first step in doing something more exciting with literature.

Reklamcupen: In the Name of Creativity

Summer blahs? Not for creative people. Reklamcupen - the Advertising Cup - is underway, a competition sponsored by Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter.

Since 2004, Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter has given an award for the most creative advertisement for a particular brand with a special kind of competition. The contest, called Reklamcupen, is designed like an athletic tournament, with the first round finishing today, July 21. Two ads compete against each other in a total of 10 matches, then it's time for the next round, then the quarter finals, the semifinals and the final.
