Saveur Launches E-Book

Featuring simple dishes that are easy to prepare, Saveur releases its first e-book, SAVEUR: Easy Italian.

The first in a series of e-books, SAVEUR: Easy Italian, was released on December 6 for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. It is currently available only at the Apple iBookstore, but will eventually be for sale on Kindle and Nook as well. SAVEUR: Easy Italian quickly hit the No. 3 spot in the Cooking, Food, and Wine category. The title features 30 recipes for classic dishes that are simple to prepare, using ingredients likely found already in your pantry, including minestrone soup, pastas, and panna cotta.

Bonnierförlagen author Jonas Karlsson's new short story collection Spelreglerna (Rules of the game) is being published with a particularly wide range of options. The printed collection will be joined by an e-book version, an audio book version, plus each short story will be available also separately.

Finnish author-illustrator Jukka Lemmetty's Alpo finds new life in an app for kids.

When Finland's book publisher Tammi decided to do a different kind of e-book for children, it was obvious at this point that the way to go was with an app. "We thought it was important to get started with apps - not just e-books - since for now the app format  is actually even more suitable for doing a children's book," says Mari Männistö, business manager at Tammi. "Previous e-book titles for kids have been more like a traditional book that you can just read on screen," she says.

Norway's Cappelen Damm has published the popular children's picture book Garmanns sommer (Garmann's Summer) by prizewinning author-illustrator Stian Hole, in a new digital version for the iPad.

Karsten and Petra for the iPad

Cappelen Damm's hugely popular Karsten and Petra characters now available on the iPad.

Best friends Karsten and Petra may be about the most beloved children's book characters in Norway. From their first meeting, the two face a range of adventures in the book series by Tor Åge Bringsværd and illustrated by Anne Holt, published by Cappelen Damm.

And now the two can be read on an iPad - with the first book, Karsten får ikke sove (Karsten Mustn't Sleep) for free. Inside the app, a library include four other books featuring the pair, each available for NOK 42.

A Good Mix for Young Readers

Bonnierförlagen's newest publisher, Mix, to focus on books for readers aged 17-27.

Mix is the newest publishing house within Bonnierförlagen. The target group is readers 17-27 years old, making Mix the largest publisher in Sweden to focus on crossover literature: books for young adults (YA) and adults alike.

"We hope to minimize the gap we see between adult and YA books," says Titti Persson, senior editor at Mix. "We've also seen that this type of literature is selling more in the U.S. But there it's a lot of crossover between children's and YA books that adults are reading.

Grill Master a Hit

Grill cookbook from Weldon Owen for Williams Sonoma No. 1 in cookbooks at Apple's iBookstore.

The digital edition of the Weldon Owen title Williams-Sonoma Grill Master last week was the No. 1 best-selling cookbook in the Apple iBookstore in the U.S. Written by Fred Thompson, the title is a definitive guide to everyone's favorite way to cook, and is the first cookbook in the store to feature embedded video.

"Apple has been very supportive of the initiative to convert our titles to fixed-layout ebooks for the iPad," says Roger Shaw, vice president and publisher at Weldon Owen.

LasseMaja Series Out as E-books

Bonnier Carlsen's popular children's detective series launched as e-books - in Swedish and English. 

Bonnier Carlsen's children's books about the detective agency LasseMaja have been a big hit in Sweden. The five books from the series are now being released as e-books - in Swedish and in cooperation with Weldon Owen in San Francisco in English, with LasseMaja, the main character, called JerryMaya.

The books will be in an e-pub format and will be available worldwide at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks and other places.

Morberg Hits the iPad and the Newsstands

Swedish actor and chef Per Morberg is everwhere these days with a new iPad app based on his book Morberg jagar och lagar from Bonnier Fakta and his own magazine Magasin Morberg from Spoon.

Per Morberg is one of Sweden's most popular cooking celebrities, both appearing on TV4's channels as well as in books from Bonnier Fakta. Now his book Morberg jagar och lagar (Morberg hunts and cooks) has come out in an edition for the iPad.

Cappelen Damm Opens Online Bookstore for the E-Reader

Digitalbok.no, the Norwegian e-book retailer owned by Cappelen Damm, is launching a new bookstore for e-books on an e-reader.

Readers in Norway who are ready to make the switch to digital books have just gotten a boost: online e-book retailer Digitalbok.no has launched a digital bookstore for an e-reader. The e-reader Bookeen is available from Digitalbok.no for NOK 1,899, complete with the bookstore loaded and a free copy of Torgrim Eggen's bestselling Trynefaktoren (the snout factor) during the launch period.
