Klaus Humann to Start New Publishing House

Bonnier Media Deutschland launching new children’s book publishing house under Klaus Humann.

Klaus Humann, publishing director at Carlsen Verlag since 1997, will be leaving the company to start up a new house that will publish picture books and children's books.

ECON's awards and yearbook highlight corporate communication at its best.

Last week German book publisher ECON Verlag gave out its annual Corporate Communication Awards in Berlin. ECON, a part of publishing house Ullstein Buchverlage, has since its founding in 1950 been one of Germany's leading non-fiction publishers, specializing in finance and economy titles as its name indicates.

Actors Win for Their Voices

And the winners for this year's Hamburg Hörbuch Osterwold Prize are: Elisabeth Schwarz and August Zirner.

For the eighth year in a row, Germany's Hörbuch Hamburg Osterwold Prizes were awarded to the actors whose vocal talents in reading aloud were deemed the best during the year. Elisabeth Schwarz and August Zirner were this year's recipients of the prize. Schwarz won for her reading of Natascha Kampusch's 3096 Tage (3096 Days), which according to CEO Johannes Stricker was deeply impressive because of her "respectful distance from the text and a sincere and genuine sympathy for the facts at the same.

The Book Future

We spoke with Bonnierförlagen CEO Jacob Dalborg and Bonnier Media Deutschland CEO Hartmut Jedicke about the new roles each will be taking – Dalborg on the boards of the Finnish and Norwegian book companies and Jedicke as board chair for Bonnier Publishing in the U.K.

What are your goals for the Nordic country operations and Finland in particular, Jacob?

Jacob Dalborg: For my part it's about working to ensure we have clever and competitive strategies for each country and putting our efforts into the literary strengths we have at Bonnier.

New Focus

Maria Curman will be stepping down as CEO for Bonnier Books at the end of 2011 after ten years as CEO.

Maria Curman will be leaving her position as CEO of Bonnier Books and will be focusing instead on her work as a Bonnier board member. As a result, Bonnierförlagen CEO Jacob Dalborg will be taking on responsibilities for Bonnier's Finnish and Norwegian operations within books, and Bonnier Media Deutschland CEO Hartmut Jedicke will become the new board chair for Bonnier Publishing in the U.K.

Crime and Clothes

Crime writers have never looked so glamorous. Starting October 1 that is, when some of the most popular - and most famous - authors from German publishing house Ullstein will appear nattily dressed and elegantly posed in ads across Germany. The campaign, interestingly, is not for a series of new detective novels, but for clothing chain Peek & Cloppenburg.

"The campaign is really sophisticated, because it's not loud," says Antonia Besse, marketing director for Ullstein.

Inside WikiLeaks to be Published in 18 Editions

Daniel Domscheit-Berg's Inside WikiLeaks wasn't just a hot property for Ullstein Buchverlage in Germany. The upcoming release was quickly snapped up by other publishers. Ullstein's Pia Götz explains. 

It takes years for the average book to go from idea to manuscript to bookstore and finally into a reader's eager hands. But for the upcoming Inside WikiLeaks, which will be released in Germany on Feb.

Fall Full of New Titles from Bonnier International Magazines

Anders Malmsten on four new magazines: Science Illustrated in Estonia and Russia, History Illustrated in Germany and Popular Science in Sweden.

Magazines are on the upswing again. At least for Bonnier International Magazines, which premiered four new editions this fall - Science Illustrated in Estonia on Oct. 26 and in Russia on Sept. 26, History Illustrated in Germany on Oct. 13 and Popular Science in Sweden on Nov. 2.

Gabriel, Carlsen and Cappelen Damm Win Children's Literature Prize

Bonnier book publishing houses wins three of four categories in the prestigious Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis 2010: non-fiction, picture book and children's book.

Gabriel Verlag (an imprint of Thienemann) and Carlsen Verlag in Germany and Norway's Cappelen Damm won prizes in this year's Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis 2010.
